When you apply for a Digital Signature Certificate in India, you choose a validity period. Understanding how DSC validity works — and planning for timely renewal — is essential to avoid any disruption in your digital filings and compliance activities.

Available Validity Periods

Class 3 DSCs in India are issued with the following validity options:

  • 1 Year: Suitable if you have a one-time requirement or want to try before committing to a longer period.
  • 2 Years (Most Popular): The standard choice for most individuals and businesses. Best cost-to-convenience ratio.
  • 3 Years: Ideal for long-term users who want to minimise renewal frequency.

Note: The maximum validity allowed by the CCA for Class 3 DSC is 3 years from the date of issuance.

When Does Validity Start?

Your DSC validity starts on the date of issuance by the Certifying Authority — not the date you ordered it or the date you received the USB token. If there is a delay between payment and issuance (e.g., document issues), that delay eats into your validity period.

What Happens When a DSC Expires?

When your DSC expires:

  • You can no longer sign new documents or forms using the expired certificate
  • Government portals (MCA, Income Tax, GST) will reject login attempts with an expired DSC
  • E-tender bids submitted after expiry will be invalid
  • You must apply for a fresh DSC (not a renewal) — expired DSCs cannot be renewed

However, documents signed before the expiry date remain legally valid even after the DSC expires. The signature's validity is determined by the timestamp at the time of signing.

How to Check Your DSC Expiry

  • Open Windows Certificate Manager: Win+R → type "certmgr.msc" → Personal → Certificates
  • Check your USB token software (ePass2003, SafeNet, Proxkey) — it shows certificate details and expiry
  • Government portals often show the DSC expiry when you log in with your token

We recommend a 2-year validity for most users as the best balance of cost and convenience. For frequent filers and organisations, a 3-year DSC minimises administrative overhead.
