Standard Digital Signature Certificate (Personal DSC)

The standard DSC most people are familiar with is issued to an individual or organisation and stored on a FIPS USB token. It is used for:

  • Signing government forms manually (one at a time) on portals like MCA, Income Tax, GST
  • Digitally signing PDF documents in Adobe Acrobat or similar software
  • Authenticating e-tender bids
  • Each signing action requires the user to insert the USB token and enter the PIN

Document Signer Certificate (Bulk Signing)

A Document Signer Certificate (also called Bulk Signer DSC or Server-Based DSC) is a special-purpose certificate designed for automated, high-volume document signing. It is typically used by:

  • Banks and financial institutions for bulk statement generation
  • Insurance companies for policy document signing
  • Healthcare organisations for patient report signing
  • Large enterprises generating thousands of signed PDFs daily
  • e-Invoicing systems automating invoice generation under GST

Unlike a standard DSC stored on a USB token, a Document Signer Certificate is stored on a server-side HSM (Hardware Security Module) and integrated into the application or workflow system.

  • Storage: Standard DSC on USB token; Document Signer on HSM server
  • Volume: Standard DSC for manual, individual signings; Document Signer for batch/automated signings
  • Integration: Document Signers require API/SDK integration with business systems
