What Makes a DSC "Class 3"?

DSC classes are defined by the level of identity verification the Certifying Authority (CA) performs before issuing the certificate. Class 3 is the most rigorous:

  • Original document verification: CA verifies the applicant's Aadhaar, PAN, and photograph in real time
  • FIPS token storage: Private key must be stored on a FIPS 140-2 Level 2 or higher USB cryptographic token
  • Strong key pair: RSA 2048-bit or ECC 256-bit key pairs are generated and stored on the hardware token
  • Validity: Issued for 1, 2, or 3 years — most common is 2 years

Types of Class 3 DSC

Class 3 DSCs come in several variants depending on who the certificate is issued to and for what purpose:

  • Class 3 Individual (Signing): Issued to an individual by name — for ITR filing, personal regulatory filings, EPFO
  • Class 3 Individual (Encryption): For encrypting documents — less common in practice
  • Class 3 Organisation (Signing): Issued to an individual as the authorised signatory of a company — name of person and company both on certificate; for MCA, GST, e-tenders
  • Class 3 DGFT: A special-purpose certificate with DGFT OID for the DGFT portal — for importers/exporters
  • Class 3 Document Signer: Server-based certificate for bulk automated signing — for enterprise use
