Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) and foreign nationals who need to participate in Indian government processes — such as company incorporation, income tax filings, DGFT operations, or MCA submissions — often require a Digital Signature Certificate (DSC). While the process is slightly different from a resident Indian's application, it is entirely possible to obtain a valid Indian DSC from abroad.
Do NRIs and Foreign Nationals Need an Indian DSC?
Yes, in many cases. Common scenarios include:
- NRIs who are directors in Indian companies (MCA/ROC filings require a DSC)
- Foreign nationals investing in or setting up a company in India
- NRIs filing income tax returns in India
- Importers/exporters with an IEC who need a DGFT DSC
- Foreign nationals with an Aadhaar card (granted to long-term residents)
Documents Required for NRI / Foreign National DSC
The document requirements differ slightly based on whether you have Indian or foreign identity documents:
- Aadhaar-based verification (preferred): If you have an Aadhaar card, the process is the same as for resident Indians. Aadhaar eKYC simplifies video verification significantly.
- Passport-based verification: Valid passport (Indian or foreign), a notarised/apostilled address proof (bank statement, utility bill), PAN card (mandatory if you have one), recent photograph, and mobile number for OTP verification.
- Organisation DSC for NRI directors: Company PAN, COI, board resolution authorising the NRI director, and the director's personal identity documents.
Video Verification for Overseas Applicants
Video verification is conducted via a video call (WhatsApp, Zoom or Google Meet). If you are overseas, schedule the call during Indian business hours (Mon–Sat, 10am–6:30pm IST). You will need to show your original documents on camera. Apostilled foreign documents are accepted by most CAs.

Once issued, the USB token can be delivered to an Indian address (a trusted contact, company office) or in some cases to an overseas address via international courier. The DSC is fully valid and accepted on all Indian government portals once registered.
